Somewhere on the way to Desaru, Malaysia
2005
It was a cycling trip to Desaru, Malaysia, except I didn’t cycle. I was all of 18 back then, and my parents did not allow me to cycle on the roads in foreign lands as they felt I was too clumsy and would fall and break my skull or something to that effect (and yes, I’m not one to rebel against the parents). And mind you these are the same parents who happily let me trek in the Malaysia rainforests and climb mountains. They did, however, allow me to take part in the night cycling trip the night before we headed to Malaysia. Little did they know that cycling in Malaysia is about a million times safer. Oh, but a million times more hilly too admittedly.
Anyhow, a few of us went around in the safety car, while we laughed and waved at our friends who were struggling to keep their legs and bums intact. Since being a car meant we were often very far ahead of the pack, we would occasionally stop to save petrol, and also for some fresh air.
One such stop was at a watermelon field. There were two farmers working on the field collecting the watermelon – one would pick the watermelon from the ground and pass it to the other person by throwing it. I’d never seen a watermelon being grown, so this to me, was quite fascinating.

Every photograph we take contains a story, but we often do not spend enough time sharing that story with others. Hence, Foto Friday was born to give some recognition to these forgotten photographs and the memories they hold. Taken over many trips (2004-present) using the author’s crappy cameras and whatever minimal photography skills she has, these photographs serve to give you a little insight into the author’s travels. And if you haven’t realised by now, they’ll be out on Fridays.
